CHESTERVILLE – As spring approaches, many in the agricultural sector look forward to county seed, feed and forage shows, with winners at the county level proceeding to the Ottawa Valley Championship Seed, Feed and Forage Show. Winners from the OVCSFFS are announced and awards presented at the Ottawa Valley Farm Show are generally held in March, with both events organized by the Ottawa Valley Seed Growers Association.

This agricultural organization was formed in 1927 by farmers who began working together to promote the sale of their seeds at a time when limited options were available to them. The OVSGA is considered a unique organization, as it represents twelve counties in Eastern Ontario, with county representatives on the board of directors.

The 2022 Ottawa Valley Championship Seed, Feed and Forage Show is planned for Sat., March 12. The “judges and seed show committee members will be judging” the top entries from county shows, commented Arlene Ross, administrator for the Ottawa Valley Seed Growers Association, before explaining the awards’ presentation is usually held during the Ottawa Valley Farm Show.

Several county soil and crop improvement associations are in the process of planning their seed, feed and forage shows as March approaches. Ashley Knapton, secretary-treasurer of the Lanark Soil and Crop Improvement Association commented their seed show is planned for March 9, before continuing more details will be confirmed as “the Covid situation evolves.” Grenville Soil and Crops does not host an annual seed show according to information received from Bryan Cook of the Grenville SCIA.

The Stormont Seed and Forage Show is planned for Wed., March 2, with entries to be dropped off between 10 and 11:30 a.m. at the Crysler Community Centre. There will be no Crysler Farm Show again this year. More information can be obtained by emailing stormontscia@gmail.com.

Glengarry Soil and Crop will be holding their Seed and Forage Show on Wed., Feb. 9 between 1 and 3 p.m. at 17829 Strathmore Road, Monkland, and Marc Sumure, secretary-treasurer of the PSCIA commenting that the seed judging for the Prescott County SCIA will be on Feb. 23; with more details to follow.
