The Editor,

I have read a couple of comments on your editorial page recently taking shots at solar and wind generation as being surplus to our needs. Green energy generation hasn’t been installed because we needed more electricity, it is because we need more sustainable electricity. Ten per cent of our generation in Ontario is from natural gas. If we are serious about meeting our emissions reduction goals, we have to stop burning fossil fuels entirely as soon as we can. In order to be ready for this, we have to have grid scale renewable energy already up and running to complement our hydro and nuclear generation. We will make mistakes along the way as we move to an emissions free society, but we will have to learn how to do it or our future is grim indeed.
