LONDON – On Thurs., July 11 just after 8:30 p.m. London fire crews responded to reports of a large barn fire at 3700 Old Victoria Road, London Dairy Farms. London firefighters, with mutual aid from Central Elgin and Thames Centre fought the stubborn fire throughout the night.
At around 1:45 a.m., London fire posted on social media that crews were continuing to work on the stubborn hay barn fire and that over 450,000 litres of water had been used and two excavators had been moved in to remove hay. Approximately 30 firefighters were on scene.
As a result of the fire, Old Victoria Road was closed between Discovery Drive and Wilton Grove Road temporarily.
The barn in question was approximately 100 metres by 25-30 metres wide, filled mainly with hay. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other nearby buildings, and no livestock were in danger.
This is the second fire at London Dairy Farms in just over a year. In March of 2023 a building in which repairs were made to farm equipment was destroyed, apparently because of welding.
Officials from the city and Ontario’s Ministry of Environment attended the scene overnight.
While the fire wasn’t being deemed suspicious, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office would be investigating the cause as it has likely caused millions of dollars in damage.
