Spring is often a time for new births on the farm. It is also a great time in the sheep industry for marketing. Current prices for light and heavy lambs contributes to bright optimism in the sheep industry. Easter and Orthodox Easter combined with Ramadan are all resulting in high demand at a time of year when supplies are tight. Another period of high demand for lamb will follow with Eid (Festival of Sacrifice) for the Islamic faith which will occur July 9-10.

Auction market prices are currently running about 40 – 50 cents/lb, less than they were in 2021, but they are still favourable and higher than the 5-year industry average.

As recovery from the pandemic and lockdowns continues, summer learning opportunities will present themselves. A few upcoming local events for producers allow time to get out and socialize and to welcome new participants to learn together. 

Eastern Ontario Sheep Expo – June 11 at the South Mountain Agricultural Hall 

Vendors will be displaying fencing, building and other sheep supplies and an interesting program will attract new and current producers alike. Running 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the South Mountain Agricultural Hall. Speaker topics include:
